December 5-11, 2008
  • If you turned your irrigation controller off with the last rain, plants will need water every 2-3 weeks without rain. Don’t forget those under the eves even when it does rain.
  • Expand or start your rose garden with a wish list for the2009 All American Rose winners. See your local full service garden center for a list.
  • Do not begin pruning deciduous trees until most of the leaves have fallen. This will give you a better view of the tree’s structure.
  • Early spring blooming shrubs and trees can wait to be pruned until they have bloomed. If you prune them now you will lose out on the flowering glory this spring.
  • Apply a thick layer of mulch (about 3” deep) in all of your garden beds. It will enrich the soil and keep it from compacting in the winter rain. However, not directly on trunk and root crown of tree, especially native oaks.
  • Plant colorful iceland poppies to fill flowerbeds with color through winter. They’ll bloom in cups of orange, white, yellow, pink, red or cream flowers.
