December 12-18, 2008
  • Your local garden center is filled with holiday gift plants. You will find pointsettias, kalanchoes, Christmas cactus, chrysanthemums, violets and more! They all make great gifts for friends, family, and co-workers.
  • Protect frost-tender plants when frost is expected. Move container plants that are susceptible to south or west walls or under an overhang. Decrease the frequency of watering for those that cannot be moved, which will help to decrease nitrogen uptake and discourage susceptible new growth.
  • Nothing compares to fresh berries from your own garden. Bare root berry plants are available in garden centers now.
  • Fruit trees and evergreen shrubbery should be pruned and shaped this time of year. Check pruning shears to be sure that they are sharpened and oiled.
  • Don’t forget to water plants that are under overhangs, because the rain won’t reach them.
  • Rake leaves, fallen flower petals, and other debris from under trees and shrubs. Bag up and remove from garden. This helps protect your plants from disease.
