June 12-25, 2009
  • Buy Dad a living remembrance from your favorite nursery. Give a gift that says “thanks” all year round, citrus trees are great.
  • Use wire cylinders to keep tomato plants off the ground, prevent rot, improve fruit set and ease harvest. They are also good for controlling unruly cucumbers and squash plants.
  • Harvest beets, pole beans, cucumbers, carrots, and squash when they are young. They’re tasty and can be attractively prepared.
  • Put shut off valves on all your hoses to conserve water.
  • Feed houseplants on a monthly basis. It’s their biggest growing season thanks to brighter light and more warmth. Move them back from western or southern facing windows to prevent burn.
  • Set your mower blades higher. Use 2 - 2 ½ inches for bluegrass lawns, 2 ½ - 3 inches for tall fescue and 1 inch for warm season lawns such as Bermuda and Zoysia.
  • Celebrate the first day of summer by planting hot weather annuals.
