  • Use tomato cages around tomato plants. These wire cylinders keep the plant off the ground, improve fruit set and ease harvest.
  • May is a great month for planting annuals. Plant cosmos, vinca, cheerful marigolds, petunias, salvias and zinnias. Shade areas will be brightened with impatiens, begonias and coleus.
  • Check drip systems before the summer heat kicks in, run drip-irrigation systems to make sure they are working properly Clean filters, and check emitters and spray heads – replace if they aren’t working. After making repairs, open end caps and flush lines to remove any dirt or debris before running the system again.
  • This is a terrific month to plant tasty herbs for use in summer BBQ’s. Try mint and rosemary for lamb or basil for beef and pork.
  • As the temperature rises, water the lawn. Early morning is best.
