Use tomato cages around tomato plants. These wire cylinders keep the plant off the ground, improve fruit set and ease harvest.
May is a great month for planting annuals. Plant cosmos, vinca, cheerful marigolds, petunias, salvias and zinnias. Shade areas will be brightened with impatiens, begonias and coleus.
Check drip systems before the summer heat kicks in, run drip-irrigation systems to make sure they are working properly Clean filters, and check emitters and spray heads – replace if they aren’t working. After making repairs, open end caps and flush lines to remove any dirt or debris before running the system again.
This is a terrific month to plant tasty herbs for use in summer BBQ’s. Try mint and rosemary for lamb or basil for beef and pork.
As the temperature rises, water the lawn. Early morning is best.
