Services :: Design

We strive to design in a way that reflects natural occurances. For example, if we put a river bed that bends across the property, we will also plant a boulder that would have been the natural cause of the bend. This makes the design more convincing.

We do most of our own design for projects however we are willing to adapt or customize any design the client already has as well.

The consultation is the foundation of any successful project. Our design approach differs from most because we do not force our ideas upon the client. We are unique in that we happily incorporate the client's specific wishes and ideas into the design. After all, the client owns the property and should "own" the end result.

Following are the basic steps in our design process:
  • Initial consultation
  • Base sheet – we need a layout of the property that is to scale. If the client does not already have one, we will take the measurements and create the base sheet for them.
  • Layout of hardscape features – here we are creating functional outdoor living areas. These items include patios, decks, arbors, gazebos, pathways, retaining walls, water features, cooking areas and more.
  • Layout of tree locations – these are the canopy or roof of the living spaces.
  • Layout of the open spaces – these include lawn, ground cover, mulch, etc.
  • Layout of the foundation plantings – these are the medium to large sized shrubs and represent the walls of the living spaces.
  • Layout of the accent plantings – these are the focal points and may have a unique blooming season with respect to the surrounding shrubs. They are strategically placed for viewing from within the house and provide an invitation to come into the outdoor space.
  • Layout of perennial and seasonal color beds – while not necessarily large, these beds are designed for viewing from both the interior and exterior living spaces of the property.
  • Layout of mass plantings – these plantings fill in the space between the foundation plantings and the color beds.
  • Layout of boulders, other – the design process does not really end until the project is complete as we refine the placement of elements all along the way
  • After the layout design is complete and approved, our irrigation team designs an irrigation system to maximize efficiency, function and water conservation. We strive to use low pressure and low flow systems whenever possible
  • This is also the time when our lighting team designs the lighting systems. This includes soft flood lighting for living spaces, path lighting (not a runway) to draw you to from one living space to another, silhouette / back lighting for water features and specimen trees, and accent lighting.
